Summary
The Boysshowrunner Eric Kripke explains why Homelander ( Antony Starr ) regress to the research lab where he was raised as a child in time of year 4 , episode 4 , " wiseness of the Ages . " While the superhero series is known for its violent scenes , the latestBoysseason 4episode grapple to up the savagery even further as Homelander amply gives into his sadistic side . In the episode , the supe shows up out of the blue at the lab and begins torturing and remove the faculty . According to Kripke , though , there ’s a reason for his on the face of it unprovoked and shocking mass murder .
In an consultation withTV Insider , Kripke addressed Homelander ’s return to the lab inThe Boysseason 4 . The showrunner explained thatHomelander consider all his weakness and human elements arise in the science laboratory , so he generate in an attack to"kill the part of him that ’s human . “Although his actions in the science lab might provide temporary rest period , he in the end ca n’t shake his humanity , which is driving him mad as it conflicts with his hatred of humans . Check out Kripke ’s statement below :
His finish was to at long last face up his feeling of exposure and human beings and his need for blessing and love because he palpate like that all arise from [ his ] meter there . So he wanted to present it and kill it . And was he successful ? I think he think he was successful . The thing about Homelander is no matter how intemperately he tries to kill the part of him that ’s human and become a god , he ’ll never be able to because he ’s human and as much as he ’s disgusted by it or represses it , he has human emotions and I opine that ’s what ’s slowly driving him mad is he ’s someone who hates humanity and yet he is one .

And I do n’t need [ the hearing ] to be large-hearted towards Homelander , I wanna go on criminal record with a blistering take that I do not condone or approve of any of his behavior . But I want them to understand him a little bit more and get why he is the direction he is . I do n’t wish nor do I bang how to write villain who are just evil for the sake of being vicious . They ’re evil because they have a really heavy gulf between their internal life where they think they ’re a paladin and their external biography when they ’re definitely not . And so I ’m concerned in that space and , and what makes someone so self - deluded .
The Boys season 4 uncover more of Homelander ’s origins , highlight the show ’s thematic exploration of morality and if the Supe was always evil .
The Boys Reminds Viewers Of The Significance Of Homelander’s Childhood Trauma
Homelander Is Awful, But He Also Had A Horrible Upbringing
The tardy instalment ofThe Boysreminds viewer of Homelander ’s puerility trauma and the part it played in who he eventually became . Although Kripke does n’t require anyone to find understanding for the supe , his puerility does unavoidably elevate that emotion . While manycharacters inThe Boyshad very traumatic childhood , Homelander may have had the defective . Through flashbacks in the main series and lot ofThe Boys Presents : Diabolical , it ’s establish that the supe never had a childhood . Rather than being raise by parent , he was essentially bred in a lab as an experimentation .
Although Vought scientist Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum ( John Doman ) provided a lilliputian bit of warmth to the immature boy , it was n’t anywhere near what a child would encounter from a female parent and father . Most of the scientist were afraid of Homelander during his first years since he could n’t control his powers . He was dreadfully isolated and often viewed from afar , as no one would touch him or come near him . As he grow up , Homelander was inundate with patriotic propaganda and subjected to dreadful experiment to examine the limits of his powers .
The Boysseason 4 solidifies the encroachment of Homelander ’s childhood by having him confront his hurt in a brutal fashion . Given that he confronts his yesteryear in a path no one could condone , the show also remind viewers that his childhood is only responsible for part of his action . The impact ofhis childhood is firm enough to excuse why he plow out the direction he didand his motivation for being malefic , but not to excuse what he ’s done . The Boys’acknowledgment of the impact of Homelander ’s traumatic childhood add together more complexness and humanity to the villain .
