Developer Thorium’sUnderMineis one the latest examples of roguelike dungeon crawlers that endeavor to put up playfulness twists on the well - worn genre . Unlike a heap of its peers , however , UnderMinefinds little ways to succeed and place itself apart . From implementing RPG - comparable components like permanent rise and a unique resurrection system that shift dialogue and tale advance options more or less , there ’s a band here to screw . There are still almost too many similarities toevery other roguelike gamein existence , however , and a sense of repetitiousness that often plagues these title . Still , UnderMinehas so many corking quality that it nearly strikes amber in spitefulness of its larger offspring .

The first sign ofUnderMine ’s singularity get along right in the start stage with its revolving door protagonist system . When one lineament dies , instead of players resurrect as that character again , a new one accept their place . While there ’s an easy argument to be made that this could easily lead to a want of worked up investiture , UnderMineis toy more for laugh than anything else . Connecting with a protagonist is n’t an issue here because the game is a batch more focussed on being fast - pace and slaphappy storytelling . These two elements combine well and it make the protagonist shifting work all the better .

Arthur Morgan, V, and Link over a blurred Elden Ring Background

UnderMine ’s tale is almost a parody of thetypical roguelike dungeoncrawler biz . player are tasked by a wizard with investigating a mine where endless tremor and quakes have been taking place . Naturally , monster and various genus Bos conflict will chivy players and their various random characters along the manner , becoming progressively harder the deeper they go down the mine . But every meter a character dies , other NPCs will point out how the protagonist looks unlike and the wizard often treats the characters as if they ’re dispensable . It ’s almost satiric of the entire roguelike ’s " live , die , repeat " missionary work statement in universal , andUnderMineis all the funny because of it .

Another big area whereUnderMinebranches away from its predecessors is in its upgrades system . While histrion are able to find temporary upgrades throughout their adventure in the mine , after every decease , they can use the gold they acquired from their last life to buy permanent upgrades to stats like wellness , armour and weapon damage . These do not melt upon death , and it ’s an experience where death after a while is almost bucked up . While this is a fun niggling twist that makesUnderMinemore cognate to RPGs , it also gets to a level where repeatedly being forced to exit to get lasting ascent becomes annoying .

Boss battle inUnderMineare also mostly unimaginative , sport the same kind of bosses player will notice in dozens of other roguelike or RPG titles . Rock monsters that use predictable rolling wave attack , beast creatures that implement unblockable charging damage , and everything else a player can think are all present here . There are obviously only so many ways that a game like this can use combat efficaciously , but that does n’t make it any less unimaginative . In fact , combat in worldwide is often not all that action . Attacks straddle from a basic axe vacillation to a throw fire that can be too well spammed . There is some assortment offer afterwards in the game after upgrading , but it ’s not enough to offset former repetitiousness .

White Chalier from floating cemetery

UnderMinestill mostly works , though . Its tight - paced run , which can be completed in anywhere from 10 hours to 20 depending on playstyle and gift , works to counterbalance its more monotonous factor . The game is also just beautiful to attend at , with extremely elaborated and varied type model and map layouts . Its satiric , light - hearted story is a breathing spell of brisk breeze in a writing style that mostly puts out overly serious and grimdark rubric .   The little machine on theovercrowded roguelike genreare almost enough to prepare the game apart and , even though it ’s not a perfect game , UnderMineis anything but forgettable , make it worth a smell for fans of the genre or those looking for a welcoming introduction to it .
