Cast
free-base on Jim Davis ’s amusing serial publication , Garfield is a new imagining of the lasagna - love guy and his friends , choose for a amply computer - animated approach . Chris Pratt voices the titular cat , with the photographic film aiming to research his early days and raw mishap for him , his friends , and his family .
Chris Pratthas received a lot of flack for taking on voice office for ostensibly no reason other than his star power , andhis cast as Garfield sparkle plenty of memesand heart - rolls ( though admittedly , the furore was much smaller than it was when he was cast as Mario).ThatThe Garfield Movieisn’t a particularly strong animated movie is n’t entirely Pratt ’s mistake , far from it , but it does make me think that , unlike last year’sThe Super Mario Bros. Movie , this new Sony outing wo n’t spring from its initial reception .
From humble beginnings to Hollywood elite group , Chris Pratt has rapidly become one of the most commercially successful role player in the history of photographic film .

The Garfield Movie’s Plot Moves Fast & Hits The Expected Beats
The Garfield Moviewastes no time introduce its titular lineament , from his seemingly bottomless tummy to his tragical lineage story , which lays the foundation for the whole secret plan . When he was a tiny , big - eyed kitten , Garfield was left in an alley by his father , Vic ( Samuel L. Jackson ) , on a dark and stormy night . Naturally , Garfield himself is supply the story for this intro , a thingmajig I found tiring almost immediately . Drawn by the scents of a nearby Italian eatery , sister Garfield left the alley behind and obtain his way into the weapon system of sweet Jon Arbuckle ( Nicholas Hoult ) .
Jon fleetly adopted the computed tomography and so established the condition quo comic readers are familiar with . However , it is n’t long before Garfield and innocent whelp Odie ( Harvey Guillén ) are yanked from their comfortable home and drawn into a mysterious plot of ground , all because of former stealer Vic . One of Vic ’s past partners in crime , Jinx ( Hannah Waddingham ) , ended up in prison because of his action , and she ’s returned for revenge . jonah insists VicandGarfield ( with wretched Odie along for the drive ) must fulfill her chosen form of retribution , which involves steal a draw of Milk River .
The GarfieldMovie , directed by Mark Dindal and write by Paul A. Kaplan , Mark Torgove , and David Reynolds , keeps a firm pace the whole fourth dimension , perhaps to secure younger viewers do n’t mislay focus too quickly . Much of the plot is concentrate on around the Milk River rip-off , and Garfield ’s strained relationship with his pop . The father - son storyline forms the core ofThe Garfield Movie , andit certainly tug at the heartstrings in exactly the fashion you ’d expect . It ’s an good way for us to acquire some compassion for Garfield , since the movie itself is n’t always concerned in making him a well - rounded quality .

Pratt’s Garfield Is Overshadowed By Stronger Performances (& Characters)
Ving Rhames is especially good as Otto
There are n’t many surprises to be had here , and the square tale , while probably working jolly well for its younger audience , wo n’t turn on adult witness . At time , it feels as thoughThe Garfield Movieis move through the motions , andit fails to tender anything specially noteworthy about its main character . Maybe the nostalgia is plainly lost on me , but I do n’t understand the appeal of Garfield as a protagonist , and this movie did little to change my brain .
Maybe I ’m asking too much for a kinfolk - tailor animated movie , but there are so many title of respect out there that prove there is more to this medium than what is being offered here .
Performance - wise , Pratt is n’t bad as Garfield . He knows how to find the humor in sure product line and injects some vulnerability into the occasional heavier emotional round . However , he ’s surrounded by a very firm voice cast , and that draw his own simple approaching stand out . Waddingham is clearly having a ball as the revengeful Jinx , and Hoult , brief as his part may be , sounds so unlike himself , I did n’t recognize him until I go steady his name in the credits .

Jackson is as honest as always , and Ving Rhames fall off into the character of Otto , a bull Vic , Garfield , and Odie see while preparing for their stickup . Otto is perhaps the most compelling character here , with a sad backstory of his own that could ’ve provided a bit more depth toThe Garfield Movieif further explore . However , this movie is more focused on the predictable beat of the armed robbery and the predictable comedic beats of Garfield fall flat on his font . Genuine laughs , outside a few clever references that will go past over some kid ' heads , are sparse .
The Garfield Movieis far from an objectionably bad take on the fictitious character , but it does leave me wondering whether the cat can actually sustain a movie all on his own . Compared to other recent animated movies , and even those still to come in 2024 , this effort feels distinctly lackluster , not offering anything original or creatively animate . possibly I ’m inquire too much for a family - oriented animated movie , but there are so many titles out there that prove there is more to this medium than what is being offered here .
The Garfield Moviereleases in theatre on Friday , May 24 . It is 101 minutes long and rated PG for activeness / endangerment and mild thematic elements .
