The story , " An Echo of Victory " by Charles Soule and Luke Ross , reveals that none other than Shara Bey and Kes Dameron , Rebel fighters and parents of Poe Dameron , helped build Echo Base . Having limited resources , Kes and Shara practice a modified A - backstage optical maser gun to bore tunnels in the frozen walls in stead of standard minelaying equipment . As a event , the laser run too strong and do a cave - in , leaving Shara and Kes trap with no way out . It ’s a clever legacy and fill connection between the original and sequel trilogy . And to think : that legacy was almost cut brusque by an polar cave - in on Hoth . specially with this fib in mind , Empire Ascendantdoes a great job of setting the stage for what ’s ahead for Marvel ’s upcomingStar Warsseries .
