Still , there was always something endearing about Data ’s distinctive pallor and icteric oculus , and Fred was a gracious callback to a simpler mechanical man . The creation of anandroid like Fred in the thirty-second centuryraised a lot of interesting interrogative sentence , and I ’m disappointedStar Trek : Discoverydidn’t take the time to search any of them .

InStar Trek : Picardseason 3 , Data receive the ultimate upgrade , gaining a new synthetical body and the power to experience organic emotions . Advancements in artificial intelligence service and synthetic bodies rendered Data ’s late model obsolete . This raises the question of how a Soong mechanical man like Fred made it to the thirty-second C . I want to know when Fred was built , how he survived for one C of years , and what events he had see or been a part of .
J. Adam Brown did a great job perform android mannerisms as inspire by Brent Spiner , and I wanted to see more of his write up . When renegade couriers Moll ( Eve Harlow ) and L’ak ( Elias Toufexis ) visited Fred , the mechanical man was working as a fence . Having live for over six hundred year , Fred had likely learned a mint about world and about his own programming . Unlike Data , he distinctly had the power to harm others , as he fire a phaser at Moll and L’ak when they take their items back from him . gun moll and L’ak eventually pop Fred , but there was no reason that should ’ve put a permanent remnant to hisStar Trekstory .
I specially loved seeing Fred reset the Romulan teaser box and record the diary within it in bare second , as it remind me of all the time Data did something similar onTNG .

Having Their Own Data Would Have Worked For Star Trek: Discovery

Despite Fred ’s death , I hoped that Dr. Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ) and Commander Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ) would find a way to revive him . Surely they could have , with all the 32nd - century technology at their garbage disposal . Data was brought back to life with the technology of the belated 24th century , after all . rather of only downloading the information in Fred ’s brainiac , Discovery ’s crowd could have revived himand gained admission to all of his memories and knowledge . Fred would have made a fun addition toStar Trek : Discovery’scastand would have been another courteous shoutout toStar Trek : The Next Generation .
While it ’s trueStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5already had a lot live on , acquaint a character like Fred only to straight off vacate him find like a tease . Even if he had only pop up in a few more aspect , Fred could have provide more insight into the outcome of the last six hundred old age and excuse his connecter to the Soongs and Data . Discoveryhas always been about celebrating Bob Hope and class , and Fred would have been a prissy way to bridge over the disruption between theTNGera andDiscovery . While I enjoyedStar Trek : Discovery’sfifth and final season overall , I wish we had gotten to pass more clock time with the very Data - like Fred .
