Without Data , the USS Enterprise - D would ’ve been destroyed on multiple occasions , and Captain Jean - Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) think the android one of his closest friends .
InStar Trek : The Next Generationseason 4 , episode 3 , " brother , " Dr. Noonien Soong spark off a homing beacon in Data ’s brain that stimulate the mechanical man to commandeer the endeavour and return to his Jehovah . When Data arrives , Soong reveal that he has created an emotion chip that will allow Data to live human emotions for the first clock time . Data ’s evil twin chum , Lore ( Brent Spiner ) , ends up steal the emotion chip mean for Data , leaving information to witness the death of Dr. Soong . While I think giving Data an emotion cow dung could have work , theTNGmovies squander the opportunity , abbreviate Data ’s emotions to comedic relief .

Data’s Emotion Chip Storyline In Star Trek: TNG Films Didn’t Work
Data’s Star Trek Generations storyline makes me wish TNG had never introduced the emotion chip.

Commander Geordi La Forge ( LeVar Burton ) helped Data repair the emotion chip shot and instal it . But rather than giving the android naturalistic human emotions , the fleck made him erratic and prone to burst of humor or fear . regard Dr. Soong had spent years build this emotion chip specifically for Data , I never understood why it would misfunction this way inStar TrekGenerations .
The emotion chip should not have change Data ’s personality so drastically .
The emotion crisp could have been used to bring data point closer to humanity in a nuanced way , and I detest the way of life it became little more than a running prank . ByStar Trek : First Contact , Data was able to turn the emotion chip on and off as he wished , and byStar Trek : Insurrection , he had take it entirely . The emotion chip should not have change Data ’s personality so drastically , but rather move over him the ability to experience the excited response to things he was already feeling in his own elbow room .
Data Had Already Achieved His Own Kind Of Emotions In Star Trek: TNG
Data was already human in all the ways that mattered.

As someone who loved Data ’s journeying onTNG , I was disappointed that the moving picture countermine his most authoritative story arc .
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Redeemed Data’s Emotion Chip Storyline
Data finally became as close to human as he could ever hope to be.
Despite his patent end inStar Trek : Nemesisand again inStar Trek : Picardseason 1 , Data returned inPicardseason 3.Picardseason 1 revealed that Data ’s consciousness had live the events ofNemesis , only to kill him off again in an emotional destruction scene with Admiral Picard . While I do n’t hate this prospect in and of itself , I do not realize whyPicardseason 1 get Data back only to kill him off again . Not to observe the fact that Data did not get to say adieu to Geordi , the person he always consider his best champion .
gratefully , Star Trek : Picardseason 3 redeemed almost all of these blooper for me . information received a new synthetic organic structure and the power to experience realistic , constitutional emotions ( with no mention of the emotion chip).His new consciousness incorporated not only Data ’s personality , but also that of Lore , B-4 , and Lal . data point also got to reunite with Geordiand the rest of his USS Enterprise - D family , finally bringing his story to a satisfying conclusion . Still , I hope we get to see more of Data ’s story , as he keep exploring his newfound emotions and continues the journeying that began back onStar Trek : The Next genesis .
