Lt . Commander Keyla Detmer ( Emily Coutts ) and Lt . Commander Joann Owosekun ( Oyin Oladejo ) have been conspicuously lacking fromStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 . Both Detmer and Owosekun have been suffice on the bridge of the USS Discovery since time of year 1 , as the helmsman and the military operation officer , severally . Although they have not been featured as prominently as some of the other characters , Detmer and Owosekun are compelling characters who have always been a welcome comportment . More than any otherStar Trekshow , Discoveryfocuses on its lead , Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin - Green ) , but Detmer and Owo have been a part of her history since the beginning .

Detmer ’s navigate skills have also come up in handy on multiple occasions , and both officers excel when stationed on the bridge .
Despite the potential difference for a great plot line in season 5 , Doug Jones ’s Saru has been abstracted for much of Star Trek : Discovery ’s last time of year .
Detmer & Owosekun Have Been Noticeably Absent From Star Trek: Discovery Season 5
Detmer and Owosekun have only appeared in two out of Discovery season 5’s six episodes so far.
Detmer and Owosekun have briefly popped up in a distich of episodes ofStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , but have otherwise been completely absent . Lt . Commander Asha ( Christina Dixon ) and Lt . Gallo ( Natalie Liconti ) took over Detmer and Owo ’s station on the USS DIscovery ’s nosepiece , while Keyla and Joann were only cite in dialogue . After the upshot ofStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , sequence 5 , " mirror , " Detmer and Owo were say to polit the ISS Enterprise back to Federation Headquarters . Star Trek : The Original Seriescame to focalize on the iconic trio of Captain Kirk , Mr. Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ) , and Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley),whileStar Trek : The Next Generationwould have episodes that often showcased one eccentric . Star Trek : Discoveryhas always centered Michael Burnham by design , but that intend some of the other characters have been sideline .
