Summary
I was very activated to see Lord Cregan Stark debut inHouse of the Dragonseason 2 , but unfortunately , his appearance was a bit of a letdown . Throughout both theA Song of Ice and Firebooks andGame of Thrones , the Starks are the main hero , the good Guy , the ones we watch over and root for more than anyone else . And by the time ofGame of Thrones ’ finish , they ’re the ones who issue on top ( albeit with a flock of grief and loss along the way ) .
Of course , the Starks are n’t the focus ofHouse of the Dragon(clue ’s in the name ) , and the only appearance from one of them - Lord Rickon pledge dedication to Rhaenyra - just registered . That was all supposed to exchange with the first appearance ofCregan Stark and a riposte to Winterfell , and technically that ’s lawful … there ’s a lot more of House Stark than in time of year 1 . But that does n’t entail it ’s what I ’d trust for .
House of the Dragon season 2 , episode 1 ends in spectacular fashion , leaving dead no doubt that the Targaryen polite war can no longer be forefend .

Cregan Stark Is Fine In House Of The Dragon - But His Role Is Too Brief
There’s Not Enough Screen Time For Tom Taylor’s Lord Of Winterfell
Cregan ( played by Tom Taylor ) is about what I ’d expected character wise . There ’s maybe a piffling bit of a Stark testimonial enactment about him , like he ’s a stock template . Take a taking into custody of Ned , a sprinkling of Robb , a dash of Jon , and rely on the audiences ’ noesis of whom these hombre are as a shorthand for his character . Talk about obligation , honor , make him sound a little unforgiving and say“Winter is coming”in a slightly baleful but undefined way , and job ’s a effective ‘ un .
We just barely begin to get settled at the Wall , to get a sentiency of who he is and the family relationship with Jacaerys that ’s apparently been developed off - screen , before there ’s a raven , Jace has to go back home , and we ’re done with the whole matter .
Sometimes diddle the hits is fine , and that ’s what we get here . It ’s nice and conversant and comforting , and might not be a problem if it had , well , play more of them . I ’ve take the volume , I did n’t anticipate Taylor to short step intoHouse of the Dragon ’s castand become one of the main players . His role is small . I just did n’t think it would be3 - minutessmall .

There ’ll be bigger scenes to come subsequently , of class : the Winter Wolves , Cregan’s“greybeards,”will combat in a few major battles , but probably not untilHouse of the Dragonseason 3 .
House of the Dragon season 2 , episode 1 contains several modest details & Easter egg that rig up future events and connect to Game of Thrones .
Cregan himself probably wo n’t add up back to it until near the end of the entire show , if it follow his Koran story . That means it could and should have take this chance to make a more lasting impression . The North remembers , but will anyone else when time of year 4 rolls around in … 2028 ? !
House Of The Dragon Left Out Almost All Of Cregan & Jace’s Book Story
There’s A Lot From Fire & Blood That Wasn’t Included In The Show
I ’m not really call for forHouse of the Dragonto massively invent a storyline for Creganout of nowhere , but or else to just take the outline from the Quran and expand upon it like it has for so many others . Fire & Bloodpresents three options for what happened with Cregan and Jacaerys : foremost , that they convey on famously and hunt and tope and had a lovely fiddling time . Secondly , Jace spent his meter try on to commute Cregan to the Faith of the Seven . And third , that Jace slept with - and then espouse - Cregan ’s bogus half - sis , Sara Snow .
Show them forging the bond certificate and have the discussion that would persuade the Lord of Winterfell to send 2,000 man to die for Rhaenyra ’s cause .
Discounting the middle of those pick , which even the book mostly dismisses , either of the other two ( or some compounding ) could ’ve made for great TV . Jace being entice by this bastard Northern missy , but ultimately stay true to his betrothal to Baela , could ’ve been compelling . Have him pal around for a few minute of arc with Cregan , allowing for something a routine wanton before the rigourousness of , well , everything comes gate-crash down upon him . Show them shape the bond and having the discussions that would persuade the Lord of Winterfell to send 2,000 men to give way for Rhaenyra ’s cause .
If nothing else , detail the Pact of Ice and Fire . Cregan does n’t just send man to their deaths for nothing , nor is it just for his good ol’ Stark honour . He and Jace make a good deal , and in return for his loyalty and soldier , Jace jibe to send his firstborn daughter to Winterfell as a ward , until she ’s previous enough to get married Cregan ’s Word and heritor . It ’s a crucial detail for the story and a neat Stark / Targaryen association for the humanity . It would ’ve taken just another minute to show , so I ’m baffle as to why they did n’t do it .

More Cregan Stark Would’ve Better Connected To One Of HOTD’s Biggest Stories
The North Story Could Have Linked To Aegon’s Dream
Another grounds I ’d have liked more of Cregan Stark here is because of something introduced back inHouse of the Dragonseason 1 : Aegon the Conqeueor ’s A Song of Ice and Fire , his prophetical dream of the White Walkers . The Starks have a role to toy in that - Jon Snow is , of course , a vocal of ice and fire himself - and so , by expand their persona even just a slight bit more , it could have more deeply connected to that root .
It ’s clearJacaerys does n’t know about Aegon ’s pipe dream . I ’ll be concerned to see how it does act out , but it ’s a bit of a shame we could n’t have him nod towards it here , in response to Cregan ’s own warning of how the Wall was build to keep out“death . ”It could still have remained a arcanum , butboth side acknowledging the greatest threat of all lies to the North , not the South , would have been fittingas a means of touching on a connective ribbon in the Targaryen arras that runs all the way from Aegon to Jon and Daenerys .

In the marvelous outline of the season , it may not touch things too much . ButGame of Thronesexcelled in the details , in how it would drop time almost luxuriating in scene and locations and characters . I appreciateHouse of the Dragonseason 2 has a flock to pack in and more important stories to state , but after a tease that wintertime was fall , I just wish - a scrap like inGame of Thronesseason 8- it ’d go a flake longer .
