Summary

George R. R. Martin reviewsHouse of the Dragonseason 2 , episode 1 and 2 . Adapting the events of Martin’sFire & Blood , the popularGame of Thronesspinoff recently returned for its soph outing on HBO , continuing the story of the Targaryen civic war . House of the Dragonseason 2 has earned rave reviewsfrom critics thus far , but Martin , who serves as an executive manufacturer on the show , largely remained silent as the first three episodes air .

In a new post on his web log , Martinnow shares his own review forHouse of the Dragonseason 2 ’s first two episodes , and his words are irresistibly electropositive . The author draw attention to the strong direction , but also the telling public presentation from the show ’s mould . Check out an excerpt from Martin ’s blog below :

What a bully way to jump the time of year . The directing was brilliant . secret plan OF THRONES oldtimer Alan Taylor directed the first sequence , and Clare Kilner the second . Both of them did a brilliant job . And I can not say enough about the playacting . Emma d’Arcy has only one line in “ A Son for a Son , ” but they does so much with their eyes and their face that they dominates the instalment ; her heartache for her slain Logos is tangible .

Tom Glynn - Carney brings Aegon alive in way we have not see before ; he ’s more than a scoundrel here , he show us the king ’s rage , his pain sensation , his fright and doubts . His humans . Rhys Ifans has been brilliant as Otto Hightower every time he has been on screen , but he exceeded himself in “ Rhaenyra the Cruel . ” His scene with King Aegon and Criston Cole after the ratcatchers are hang just crackles with witticism , tension , drama , a performance that cries out for awards attention .

Matt Smith , Olivia Cooke , Fabien Frankel , Eve Best , and the other regular were tremendous as well . The Tittensor twins were terrific as the Kingsuard twins , and their climactic swordfight is mighty up there with the Mountain and the Red Viper of Dorne , and Brienne ’s fight with Jaime Lannister .

And Phia Saban gave a twist , knock-down , heart - bump performance as Helaena Targaryen , Aegon ’s doomed , obsess queen and mother to his small fry .

Emma D’Arcy looking distraught as Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon season 2 episode 2

Saban ’s performance is peculiarly noteworthy ; very little of what she bring in to the part was in my rootage textile [ … ] In the Koran , she is a plump , pleasant , and happy young woman , cheerful and kindly , adore by the smallfolk . A dragonrider since the age of twelve , Helaena ’s large pleasure in life story is to take to the sky on the back of her dragon Dreamfyre .

None of the strangeness she displays in the show was in evidence in the book , nor is her gift for prophecy . Those were born in the writer ’ room … but once I met the show ’s version of Helaena , I could hardly take issue . Phia Saban ’s Helaena is a rich and more fascinating character than the one I created in FIRE & BLOOD , and in “ Rhaenyra the Cruel ” you may scarcely take your eyes off her .
