Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Summary
While the reveal ofDragon Age : The Veilguardhas been a prospicient time coming , the first glimpses of gameplay are making it look more likea fantasy - themedMass Effectgame than anyDragon Agegame before it . As BioWare ’s longest - running and most successful franchise next toMass Effect , Dragon Agehas been through significant changes since its initial iteration inDragon Age : Origins , which intimately resemble the classicBaldur ’s Gategames which BioWare also puzzle out on . As the serial publication progress , however , it may be losing its RPG roots almost entirely .
With a new reveal trailer and gameplay showcase , the gameoriginally declare asDragon Age : Dreadwolfis finally head toward tone ending , following what can be assumed to have been a troubled development cycles/second . From what ’s been shown so far , Veilguarddirectly trace up on the tale ofDragon Age : Inquisition’sTrespasserDLC , placing Solas as a major antagonist and his plan to tear down the Veil as the game ’s inciting incident . However , whileVeilguard ’s narrative lay down sense as aDragon Agesequel , its gameplay is starting to wait more like BioWare ’s other major RPG series .
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Gameplay Looks More Like Mass Effect
Moving Away From Tactical & More Toward Action
As can be seen inDragon Age : The Veilguard ’s 20 - moment gameplay reveal shown on June 11 via the officialDragon AgeYouTube channel , the secret plan ’s combat bears clear-cut similarities toMass Effect , and seems to slew even more towards action mechanism than its predecessor , Inquisition , already had . While this change is n’t necessarily bad , and is in line with the more natural process - great direction that the serial has been head towards , it remains to be seen ifVeilguard ’s gameplay will manage to retain any of the tactical feel that theDragon Ageseries started with .
The most obvious point of comparability betweenVeilguardandMass Effectis political party composition , with the former directly mirroring the latter by leave players to take two companion with them at a time , down from the received three of previousDragon Agegames . In a standardized vein , abilities for both Rook and fellow characters inVeilguardwork almost identically toMass Effectas well - the plot on the face of it ready only three abilities useable to Rook at any given time , and allow players to call for fellow traveller ability through a combat steering wheel , instead of immediately direct control of different party members .
Veilguarddoes include a tactical wheel of ability for Rook and other company member , which pauses time and tolerate instrumentalist to select ability without time pressure , but other tactical element from previousDragonAgegames seem minimal .

As a event , Veilguard ’s previews present it as almost wholly action - orient , like aMass Effectgame with a focus on melee combat instead of shooting and a fantasy theme replacing sci - fi . And while it would be premature to make judgement on the overall character ofVeilguard ’s scrap from just a little 20 - moment trailer set at ( seemingly ) the very starting line of the game , the game does seem to lack almost any traditional CRPG or tactical element , whichDragon old age : Inquisitionretained to some arcdegree even as it shifted more towards activity as well .
I watched the first hour of Dragon Age : The Veilguard , and I ca n’t tell if I should licitly be worried or if Inquisition looms over the series .
Veilguard Isn’t The Start Of Dragon Age’s Action Focus
Dragon Age Has Been Shifting Towards Action Since 2011
Of course , Dragon Age ’s oecumenical chemise towards more action - orient gameplay is nothing new . Even as early asDragon Age 2 , the serial had shifted aside from the more classic CRPG combat manner ofOrigins , and , coincidentally , Dragon Age 2was also the secret plan that alternate dialog option to a wheel more intimately resemblingMass upshot . But while the two games afterOriginsretained the original game ’s tactical elements to some degree , it seems like only the barest vestiges of it will be present inVeilguard- and even then , only those part that are like the organization inMass essence .
Streamlining the tactical constituent ofVeilguard ’s combat could be a net benefit , though , allowing the combat to be more focused instead of creating a nifty split up between natural process and tactics . The tactical elements that remain inDragon Age 2andInquisitioncould be more or less ignore , after all , and so it make sense from a certain perspective to minimise them even further . The action elements ofDragon Ageare , at this point in the enfranchisement ’s history , much longer - lived than the everlasting CRPG gameplay ofOrigins , and so it follows that the serial would continue developing in that direction .
With the release ofBaldur ’s Gate 3proving that " old - schoolhouse " CRPGs can still regain mainstream success , however , it can be hard not to experience likeDragon Ageis lack an opportunity by drift so far away from the gameplay ofOrigins , especially withOriginsitself being something of a spiritual heir to the original twoBaldur ’s Gategames developed by BioWare . The release , and subsequent success , ofBaldur ’s Gate 3would have occur much too far intoVeilguard ’s development for it to really influence the game ’s steering , but it does show that action is n’t the only route to success .

On some levels , it makes sense thatDragon AgeandMass Effectwould grow to be similar , as both franchises are developed by the same studio and share much of the same desoxyribonucleic acid . However , streamliningDragon Age ’s combat also fare with the risk of thin the enfranchisement ’s identity , make it " fantasyMass Effect " rather of allowing it to establish its own style . For well or worse , Dragon Age : The Veilguardseems to be the endpoint of the series ' ever - shifting identity , and its steady Diamond State - emphasis of RPG elements .
