“ What ’s odd is that [ Gray Matter ] is a really complex history . On the aerofoil it ’s like ' Oh , there ’s this guy and he drinks beer and then he starts metamorphosing into this creature . What I feel interesting was it ’s really much more a story about alcoholism an co - dependence and the fact that the report is being told through the eyes of Timmy , this little male child … the unique view of the story is that it ’s really about the relationship between the son and his father , and his father not knowing any other way to deal with his sorrow , other than through intoxicant . The little boy really does n’t know what else to do , so he ends up enabling his pa . When you sort of seethe the story down into that , I really wanted there to be this connexion between them . Between the quality that propelled the story . So [ the viewer is ] kind of jumping back and forth between watching Timmy and his dad , their relationship dissolution , and then in the present Clarence Day , you realize Timmy is sending Chief an Doc into this variety of wasp ’s nest and we do n’t know what ’s going to happen . So , a lot of it is this form of really heartfelt account between a father and Logos who are desperately trying to survive and not doing a very good job and then you have this other very suspensive [ question of ] ' What ’s behind that door ? ' as Chief and Doc head toward the apartment .
To me it ’s all about relating to the type . If I ’ve learned anything in my 30 - something years of constitution personal effects is : If you do n’t manage about the characters , then the coolest monster the coolest put firearm the coolheaded visual effects , none of it matters .
